OPEN IN ON:
EXT-DEREK & VALERIE'S HOUSE-NIGHT
SWITCH TO:
INT-DEREK'S BEDROOM
(We see Derek in the throes of another night's fitful sleep,as he's
going through a nightmare relating to his former wife, Nicole.)
FADE TO:
EXT-PARK-NIGHT
(Derek is seen wandering the park, trying to find Nicole. All of a
sudden, he sees her by the lake and runs toward her. Nicole is
dressed in an off-white blouse, black slacks and low-heeled shoes,
with the addition of a blue vest with silver, gray and white
pinstripes.)
DEREK
(overjoyed)
Nicole! Thank God I found you!
(He runs towards her and hugs her tightly, which Nicole warmly
recriprocates.)
I've wanted to tell you how sorry I was...about what I
did all those years ago.
NICOLE
You've never had to tell me, sweetheart.
DEREK
I know. I guess I was looking for some sort of validation
for what I did when...
(He pauses; the words aren't coming to him. Nicole places her
left hand on Derek's right shoulder and looks into his eyes.)
NICOLE
(reassuringly)
You killed me? Don't worry, Derek...you did the right thing.
SWITCH TO:
EXT-PARK LAKE-NIGHT
(We now move to another section of the lake's shore, where
another woman can be seen. She looks exactly like Nicole, except
she is in full vamped-out mode and wearing a body-hugging black
leather bodysuit. Her voice is more seductive than the other
Nicole, yet also has a nasty edge to it. She turns to face Derek.)
VAMP NICOLE
If you ask me, "the right thing" absolutely sucks, Derek
dearest.
(Derek puts his hand to his head and moans. The vamped-out Nicole
starts moving toward him.)
DEREK
Oh, damn it....not this again!
(He turns to the second Nicole and snaps.)
You know damned well why I had to kill you! I didn't
want you turning into...
(He waves his hands in the direction of the vamped-out Nicole's
outfit.)
well, a vampire with an extreme leather fetish!
(The vamped-out Nicole grabs Derek and whips him towards her,
moving her hands across his face, then his body-as if she's
trying to seduce him.)
VAMP NICOLE
(purring)
Derek...why should you be the only one to live forever?
Why didn't you let me become a vampire? I should have been allowed
to feast on all these weak, foolish humans so I could stay like
this. Besides...you couldn't save me from the bad guys. What makes
you think you'll save everyone?
(Nicole by now has moved to Derek's right, and the vamped-out
Nicole is on Derek's left. Nicole whips Derek away from the
other Nicole, and locks her eyes on the other Nicole, pointing
at her.)
NICOLE
Would you PLEASE shut the hell up? I certainly never
asked to be killed, you undead skank...yet I knew why Derek had
to do what he did. I'll be the first to admit, he's not perfect.
But he does what he can to help others.
VAMP NICOLE
(enraged)
What he did denied me a chance to live, you syrupy-sweet
goody two shoes! I deserved that...and your sentimental
hubby denied me that right! And if I have to haunt him for
that act the rest of his life, I will.
(Derek steps between the two Nicoles.)
DEREK
(yelling)
ENOUGH! I've said it before, and I'll say it again:
I did what I did for the greater good. And if it happened
again, I'd gladly make the same sacrifice.
(Derek turns to face the vamped-out Nicole as the first one
smiles at Derek's statement.)
You wouldn't know the meaning of sacrifice if it hit
you in the face. Unless it meant giving up the chance of
using someone as a Happy Meal.
(The other Nicole hisses and has a scowl on her face.)
NICOLE
You made the right choice...
VAMP NICOLE
(in a sing-song, taunting voice)
You made the wrong choice...
NICOLE & VAMP NICOLE
(together)
and you'll have to live with it...forever...
JUMP CUT TO:
INT-DEREK'S BEDROOM
(The word "forever" echoes for a few seconds as we see
Derek sit up, bolt straight, screaming as he does so.)
DEREK
(pleading)
Stop torturing me, Nicky...PLEASE!
(Derek puts his hands up to his face and cries.)
SWITCH TO:
EXT-LWI HEADQUARTERS-DAY
SWITCH TO:
INT-LAB-DAY
(Derek, Kate and Valerie meet in the lab to go over recent
reports on homo novus around the world. Valerie's right arm
and shoulder are still in a sling, forcing her to rely more
on her left arm, but she's recovering nicely from the attack
of a few days ago. Derek is more focused than he normally is,
which draws Kate's concern.)
KATE
Derek...slow down. You're going to wear yourself
out at this pace.
(Derek throws down a stack of papers, irritated.)
DEREK
We've gotten reports of 20 homo novus deaths in
just the past week alone worldwide...and I'm supposed to
RELAX? We're supposed to be the guardians of a new
breed of humanity, yet we're supposed to take days off?
That's...that's...hell, I'm gone. I'm going to talk to
Cmdr. Donovan again.
(Derek makes his way to the elevator.)
VALERIE
(inquisitive;raising her voice)
Chris rebuffed you the last time you asked for
protection for the potentials. What makes you think he'll
give you a better answer now?
(Derek throws his hands up in the air as he enters the
elevator, then turns to face Kate and Valerie, still
agitated.)
DEREK
How in the bloody hell do I know, Valerie?
(Derek slams the elevator's "up" button and the doors close.
Kate and Valerie continue analyzing data.)
KATE
And what exactly brought that on?
TIM
Don't judge Derek too harshly, Kate. He always gets
very moody this time of year.
KATE
Why?
TIM
Because it's when his wife died.
